碟形世界最新作品:Making Money

刚刚出炉碟形世界最新作品:Making Money

X,CVdOj+? Just read it yesterday -- anyone else feeling it's a bit of a let-down? There're funny bits and pieces but on the whole it feels less than exciting. There isn't any mystery except the one concerning the ancient golems, which starts the book but turns out to be an anti-climax. Though it's neat that instead of being gold, they turn out to be 4000, they only caused a large and noisy crowd instead of any semblance of a real crisis. The one new new charater that I really like, Mrs. Lavish, passes away rather early in the book. Though the concept of the Lavish family is interesting, Cosmo Lavish is extremely lame as the chief villian. As soon as we learn of his obsession with his lordship we know he's not much of a threat. Mr. Bent seems more or less irrelevant, his "dark secret" not so dark and not very important. His one mistake is supposed to be a Big Thing but the capital letters are rather forced. Equally disappointing is the Glooper, which never managess to anything except the gold rain at the end, despite its enormous potentials. As for character development, other than learning that Moist von Lipwig seeks danger we don't see much of any change in anyone. P mA9c1h1gaVI

Lord Vetinari as usual has most of the good lines including an amusing thesis on the psychology of people's fascination with clowns. I am saddened by the passing of dear old Wuffles but most heartened to know that after a year's mourning he has found a replacement in the Chairman -- I wonder if he'll also get Aimsbury?6V+jEJv

I hope the next one will be a Witch or Susan book. I'd prefer another Watch book but I guess it's not likely so soon after Thud.

p.s. I wonder if Vetinari allows Owlswick Jenkins to chat with Leonard da Quirm?

SPOILER!!!
xi'c!du]
s#Pp,QD(K2s1qhz Y Finally finished the book. I have to say I am a little disappointed. I had expected a Going Postal 2, but this is definitely not it. GP, I think, is very much a character-driving book. The plot is straight forward, but the characters are oh so rich you practically could paste walls with them and no mistake!`(oO!FRD^?

W"ut[F{*t/S-^Z But for MM, the plot is much more complex and maybe a little unfocused. I quite agree that the Glooper is pointless, and Hubert is a much weaker version of Stanley. I actually liked Mr. Bent, but he could use a little more brushing up or if there was more development between him and Moist after his “funny little turn”. Moist is always good at those sorts of things and it would be fun to watch. Miss Dearheart is a huge disappointment, who was being turned from an ice-maiden into a puckish, giggling fool. No matter how lame Cosmo Lavish was, he actually achieved one thing that few Discworld villains manage to succeed, which was staying alive. But, yeah, he was a step down from Gilt. Mr. Fusspot was beyond cute. I’d pay good money to watch him eat a toffee pudding. For the man himself, Moist was not so in your face anymore, I have no problem with a subdued Lipwig, but he seems run around without doing much. Whatever he achieved, it’s more to do with luck than his own talent, that’s just not enough ‘moist’ to me. But I do like the scene where he prayed to Anoia. Sergeant Angua and the rubber bone-very nice touch.
!K0TN:Aj9@;PK^O/f 0T7O/[L.uT:_ yv6O
Still, the book is “tongue in cheek” funny and Terry is always good at picking out interesting problems and phenomenons. I’d read it again if I have time. MM3KAvUtq

I am a big fan of the Watch series, but bad news for you, it gonna be a Tiffany Aching book next. I actually would perfer to see more Carrot. As much as I like Vimes, his character is all chewed up. But Carrot is still very much a puzzle to me, the way he manipulates people, yet still remains utterly upright and Mr. Nice, that’s just uncanny. I bet he gives a good run for Vetinari's money.

PS: Owlswick Jenkins and Leonard da Quirm chatting? Come on! Vetinari is smarter.

W5ba'z5rL2a j I agree that most of the new characters don't have much character or much point at that and althought Moist has some interesting moments he never grows. Yes Cosmo Lavish survived, as did the Dragon King of Arms, or Dee, or the Magpies, or the queen of the Evles -- all of them much more interesting than poor old Cosmo. I just realized that neither I nor you remembered to mention Cribbins the other villain and that's how forgettable he is! Yes Angua is pretty cute but I want to know how she is doing with Carrot. Never cared too much for him though since he's been more or less the same for several books now and with no signs of further development.7BV if6g KL7C

,G.R#vp7{,D And I wouldn't call this novel complex -- it's just filled with loose plotlines!
fPn_-E)s ]my,h3x8u
Thanks for the info about the next book but I always ignore the Tiffany ones -- I tend to think of Thud! as the one before Making Money. Lord Vetinari is one of my all time favourite characters -- I don't know if he counts as a villain? Probably not now. The count Magpie perhaps because he brings out the best from Agnes.

2007-10-9 08:47 PANDIE
Rumor has it, the next Moist book is raising taxes, so let's hope it would be better because I sincerely liked the character (He somehow reminds me of Michael Caine). To tell the truth, discworld is becoming too modern for me, I love the older ones, Mort, Pyramids, the first few books of the watch, at that time, the techie jokes are funnier. The stories are more touching.Sadly, Century of the Anchovy is just not for me. rz8^|*sdi
I swear whenever I asked people their favorite villain, Magpie always comes on top. Vetinari certainly rules but I prefer him in the background. In MM, he muddles too much. I always thought Astfgl was a interesting villain, kinda sad too. Oh, and The New Firm.
