厄休拉•克罗伯1929年出生在美国加利福尼亚州的贝克利。她也在那里长大。她的父亲是人类学家阿尔佛雷德•克罗伯(Alfred Kroeber)。她的母亲西奥多拉•克罗伯(Theodora Kroeber)是个作家,著有<Ishi in Two Worlds; a Biography of the Last Wild Indian in North America>†。厄休拉先是在拉德克利夫学院(Radcliffe College)上大学,再到哥伦比亚大学(Columbia University)读研究生。1953年,她和查尔斯•A.勒奎恩(Charles A. Le Guin)在巴黎成婚。查尔斯是个历史学家。1958年以来,他们一直居住在俄勒冈州的波特兰。他们有三个孩子,后来又有了三个孙辈孩子。
