It is such a great honor to send this mail to you as your fans of The Farseer Trilogy and The Tawny Man in China. To our view, You are the most favorite SF author among numerous SF authors. Fitz Chivalry Farseer comes to be No.1 hero in fantasy world , and Skill attracts us more than any other kind of magic. The Farseer Trilogy touched our souls. We can feel vivid aspiration and love between lines which are driving us to think more about life. The power in the Farseer has made us feel complete in soul. We have a fresh attitude toward life and give more love to family and friends.

Although the culture and value varies in the West and the East, love, royalty, responsibility, sacrifice and dedication are eternal virtue what all races in the world are pursuing for. Your great works are attracting more SF readers in China as well as in other countries. It is a pity that SC editions of The Tawny Man, The Liveship Traders and The Solider Son are not available till now except for The Farseer Trilogy. We are eager to be the first to read these titles and more interesting titles from you. Here we collect some questions from your fans. We wish they won’t bother you too much time./rC[o*|U_^}

To date, I have written nine novels and several stories set in the Realm of the Elderlings. It is a world I very much enjoy. Right now, I am working on a trilogy set in a whole new world. Yet, I often miss writing about the Farseer characters that I have come to know so well. It is like missing friends who have gone on a very long vacation! If I had a wonderful idea for a story set in that world, I would not hesitate to write it. But I would not write a story in that world just for the sake of using the setting again or profiting from it. I think that would be unfair to the readers and to myself.

2. Many fans say The The Liveship Traders exceeds The Farseer Trilogy and The Tawny Man. How do you think about it? (活船胜过刺客?);o

3pO%P:[8AG
Although both tales take place in the same world, they are written rather differently. To me, one of the major differences in writing the books were that The Farseer Trilogy was written in the first person and The Liveship Trilogy used many viewpoints. Some readers like the intimacy of first person and getting to know one character, such as Fitz, very well. Others seem to enjoy the variety of multiple viewpoints. I greatly enjoyed writing all nine books. I do not think I really prefer any one of the trilogies over the others.

3. Which character in your works is your favorite one? (HOBB最喜欢哪个人物?)
5e(j$K$_&j
?[!A5T h;yH'~-g1m
I think whatever character I am currently writing about is always my favorite at that moment. Certainly I am enjoying writing about Nevare now. But I also loved writing about Fitz and the Fool, Brashen, Althea, Kennit and long before them, Wizard and Ki and Vandien. (Those last three are from books I wrote as Megan Lindholm.) I love all my characters, even my villains. I think that a writer has to ‘put on’ the character and try to understand him or her from the inside before the writer can convincingly tell a story from that character’s point of view. I really can’t do that unless I love the character.

4. How did you create such unique magic –Skill? (怎么创造的精技?)W:T2vnU(dR$@Zt8tA6h
I am not sure that I can claim the Skill is a unique magic. It combines elements that are often used in fantasy and science fiction stories. There is a telepathy aspect, and the idea that we can focus our minds on our own bodies to do things such as healing ourselves. Some bio-feedback studies have shown that we actually can affect our own bodies in terms of slowing or speeding the heartbeat, or using meditation to lower blood pressure. So I think the idea of healing yourself with the Skill simply draws on that. I don’t think I can claim to have come up with a completely unique idea. I simply did what writers always do—we borrow ideas, mix them with other ideas, and dress them in new clothes and send them out again.

5. What inspired you to get down to writing The Farsser Trilogy? (刺客系列灵感何来?)/o#M1bk7h%n
@*yPRA"\Gm'R
As with most of my books, the ideas for the Farseer Trilogy began to gather themselves together years before I actually began to write it. Nowadays, when I get an idea for a possible story, I save it in a file on my computer. But back then, I’d scribble the idea down on a piece of paper and drop it in my desk drawer. For several years there was a torn corner from an envelope in that drawer. On it, I’d written, “What if magic was addictive, and that addiction was completely destructive?” From time to time, when I was working on other books and projects, I’d take the scrap of paper out and look at it and wonder what sort of story I could write about it. I was also intrigued by the idea of writing a book that used all the tired old clichés of fairy tales and fantasy stories, but made them seem new again. There are many clichés in our fantasy traditions: the poor boy who is secretly the rightful heir to the throne, the wise old man who teaches a young apprentice, the three sons of a king, one of whom is treacherous--- I used many of those clichés in Farseer as well as the idea of an addictive magic. Those were the two basic ideas that collided to become the Farseer Trilogy.8F|2F

这一段非常有意思!9本书的故事决对不是JK罗琳那样一拍脑袋就写出来了,就像每段故事开始时候叙述六大公国历史的小碎片一样,是一点点的拼起来的。

My current favorite author is George RR Martin. He is currently writing a very long tale called “A Song of Ice and Fire” The first book in the set is called A Game of Thrones. The story is not completed yet, but I’m very excited about these books. They are rich in characters and full of action, with many unexpected turns of events. I think he is creating his masterpiece with this story.

The books that first inspired me to desire to become a fantasy writer are probably familiar to many Chinese readers as well. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien made me realize the vast potential of fantasy. I was a young teen-ager when I first read them. I still feel great pleasure whenever I pick up those books. When I open them, no matter which page, I can fall into the story again and be just as enthralled as ever. I hope that people do not stop with just seeing the movies. The movies from the book are wonderful, but there is so much that happens in the book that is not shown on the screen. I think everyone who enjoys fantasy should read these books. _9|c3y'p W

For fantasy stories set in a contemporary urban setting, I recommend the Canadian author Charles de Lint. He has a wonderful knack for bringing magic into an every-day modern setting. His stories are enchanting, and he makes it seem as if I could find a magical place simply by buying a train ticket to Canada. Perhaps some day I shall try that!4MQTCb h@

Among the other fantasy writers I enjoy are Steven Brust, Fiona McIntosh, Roger Zelazny, Fritz Leiber, Emma Bull, Frank Herbert, Guy Gavriel Kay, Theodore Sturgeon, Anne McCaffrey--- well, the list could become endless if I went on for too long!

I think that every writer likes to day-dream about a movie made from his books. And of course we all imagine which stars we would like to play the roles, and who we would choose to be the director, and where the movie should be filmed. While this is an amusing pastime, right now there are no plans to make any movies based on any of my books. But perhaps someday . . . I can keep daydreaming about it until then. o#[ c!['gIv8~
